AFTER LESS THAN two years in charge, Emmet McDonnell last night informed the Offaly County Board he was stepping down as manager of the county’s senior footballers.
The move follows the Faithful’s four point defeat at the hands Wicklow in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Qualifiers in Aughrim yesterday.
In a statement released in the early hours of this morning, the county board said:
“While in charge, Emmet showed great loyalty, commitment and 100% dedication to the long term future of Offaly football.
“He worked tirelessly and left no stone unturned in his quest to return Offaly football to the top table, but sadly his time in charge was not very fruitful.
“The Offaly County Board wishes to sincerely thank Emmet and his management team (Gordon McDonnell, Paul Mollen and Ronan Heavey) and all the members of his backroom team for their work and would like to wish Emmet and his team the very best for the future.”
Offaly footballer Niall McNamee last night tweeted his support for McDonnell suggesting the blame for his county’s failures did not rest with the Westmeath native.
