IF THE WEXFORD hurlers are in need of a bit of inspiration before tomorrow’s Leinster semi-final against Dublin, they can reflect on today being the 10th anniversary of one of their most famous victories.
On June 13th 2004, reigning All-Ireland holders Kilkenny went in to action for the first time in that summer’s championship. They entered the Leinster campaign at the semi-final stage and had claimed the previous six provincial crowns.
They faced Wexford and were embroiled in a titanic battle. Nearing the finale Kilkenny were clinging to a 1-16 to 1-15 lead and had to survive one last Wexford attack.
Adrian Fenlon cut in a sideline from the Cusack Stand.
Peter Barry caught the ball in the square, moved to his left and went to clear.
Michael Jacob blocked him down, swivelled and lashed the ball to the roof of the net.
Cue bedlam amongst the Wexford camp as Brian Cody fell behind the goal and thumped the turf in frustration. The final whistle was blown from the puckout and Wexford’s famous success was sealed.
Pitch was very poor. Suited the Bohs cloggers and stiffs. Rovers up and running. . Doona very impressive when he came on. Great start to the weekend!
Yeah because we all know Rovers pass it like Barca.
Great crowd considering the bad weather and it been live on TV. Rovers well deserved their win. Referee lived up to the usual dire Loi officiating standards. KOH
Ah Thomas Mooney the man who thinks rovers will come sixth.
Wouldn’t be getting carried away by just about beating a poor bohs team, see how Dundalk get on tomorrow night will give a better view on things.
