THE GAA ARE to seek a deferral to the motion adopted at last weekend’s Congress which bans U16′s from playing at inter-county minor level.
A proposal will be brought forward to the next Central Council meeting on March 22nd to defer the implementation of the rule until January 1st 2015.
Ordinarily the change to the rule would come into effect four weeks after Congress but a deferral would ensure that U16 players currently involved in minor squads in the early stages of the 2014 season would not suddenly be declared ineligible.
The rule seeks to ensure that only U17 and U18 players will be eligible to compete at minor grade at inter-county level and was brought forward by Tipperary club Moyle Rovers.
The motion received support from 68.7% of delegates and the official wording reads:
Motion no: 46
Amend Rule 6.16 T.O. (Part 1) 2013 – Age Grades
to read as follows:
Minor (Club): Be under 18 years and over 14 years and
Minor (Intercounty): Be under 18 years and over 16.
The remainder of the rule to remain unchanged.
