QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY WON the opening game of the 2014 Sigerson Cup this afternoon with a 0-13 to 0-11 victory against UL at the Dub in Belfast.
UCD also progressed as they triumphed away to Athlone IT by 0-17 to 2-7 in their first round tie.
Belfast college Queen’s University host this year’s finals of the third-level competition and will be delighted to have made a successful start to their campaign.
The winners lead by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time and withstood the challenge of UL, managed by former Limerick and Laois boss Liam Kearns, to ultimately win by two points.
Queen’s University now advance to a first round tie at home to GMIT next Wednesday afternoon at The Dub.

Meanwhile UCD had four points to spare over Athlone IT after a game where the teams were tied at 1-4 to 0-7 at the interval. UCD upped the ante after half-time to move in front by 0-12 to 1-4.
Athlone IT did cut the gap to 0-14 to 2-5 yet UCD held on for success. They will have home advantage for their quarter-final tie in a fortnight’s time where they will take on DCU, NUI Galway or IT Tralee.
