Gary O'Neill scores on Drogheda return after battle with cancer

A pre-season friendly win saw the striker mark his comeback with the goal of the night.

DROGHEDA UNITEDโ€™S GARY Oโ€™Neill made a goalscoring return to football last night.

The 31-year-old striker came off the bench at half-time in the 5-1 friendly win over Leinster Senior League outfit Glebe North and received a warm reception from those present at Market Green before marking his comeback with a goal.

On 67 minutes, Oโ€™Neill controlled the ball with his chest and fired a dipping volley past the Glebe goalkeeper Alan Oโ€™Connor from 30 yards.

It was his first appearance for Drogs since being diagnosed with testicular cancer back in September and also Robbie Horganโ€™s managerial debut for the Louth club.

Having come through surgery successfully, it was announced earlier this month that Oโ€™Neill had re-signed with the Airtricity League Premier Division side as a player-coach for the upcoming season.

Twitter celebrated his return last night:

How is that typical โ€˜ruggerโ€™ humour? He made a valid observation (the jersey is swimming on him), and made a joke about it.

What used journalists actually do in the days before they could copy very boring stories straight off of twitter?
