DIEGO MARADONA TURNS 53 today so we felt it was only appropriate to celebrate some of his finest moments from his glittering, often controversial, always fascinating career.
Diego Armando Maradona Franco made his Argentinos Juniors debut as a 16-year-old, in 1976. He played a season with Boca Juniors before scoring 38 goals in 58 games for Barcelona. He was revered in Napoli, with whom he won two Serie A titles.
His greatest success as a player was winning the World Cup with Argentina in 1986. He failed to repeat the trick in a fractious Italia ’90 before failing a drug test at USA ’94 only days after scoring a cracking goal against Greece. He managed his country for two years but stepped down after a 4 — 0 quarter final defeat against his old friends — the Germans.
