GLENN WHELAN HAS been ruled out of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Austria, with Hull midfielder Stephen Quinn being called up in his place.
Whelan had earlier been described as doubtful for the game, along with Shane Long and Jon Walters, after suffering a hamstring injury, and his absence has since been confirmed by the FAI this evening.
The Stoke player also came under heavy criticism following Ireland’s loss to Sweden last night, with RTÉ analyst Eamon Dunphy remarking: “He can’t run, he can’t pass, he can’t tackle.”
27-year-old Quinn already has two Ireland caps under his belt, but has struggled with injuries since the start of the Premier League season and has consequently only featured once off the bench for Hull.
Walters, meanwhile, will have a scan on an ankle injury today, and is set to sit out training tomorrow as a precautionary measure, however he is expected to be fit for Tuesday’s game.
