As It Happened: Yeovil Town v Man United, FA Cup fourth round

League Two side Yeovil Town take on Manchester United in a bid to progress to the next stage of the FA Cup.
26 Jan 2018 FT: Man United put four goals past Yeovil Town to book their place in the fifth round the FA Cup.
26 Jan 2018 GOAL!!! Lingard makes it three. He tears through the Yeovil defence, and keeps his composure before unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
26 Jan 2018 Yeovil substitution: Irish player Connor Smith has just come on Lewis Wing for the last six minutes of normal time.

FT: Man United put four goals past Yeovil Town to book their place in the fifth round the FA Cup.

GOAL!!

Romelu Lukaku gets his name on the scoresheet to make it 4-0. Lovely counter-attack, with Marcos Rojo slipping the ball across to Lukaku to apply the finish.

Three minutes of added time to be played, but United have more than secured their spot in the next stage of the FA Cup.

GOAL!!!

Lingard makes it three. He tears through the Yeovil defence, and keeps his composure before unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Man United substitution: Angel Gomes is on for the opening goal-scorer Marcus Rashford.

Yeovil substitution: Irish player Connor Smith has just come on Lewis Wing for the last six minutes of normal time.

McTominay receives a yellow card and Yeovil have a free-kick in a threatening position.

Another decent effort by James albeit with an unorthodox way of striking the ball. But the shot loses power on the way into Romero’s arms.

When the DJ drops a banger and it all just goes off in the club

SAVE!!

Not a bad effort from Yeovil to pull one back, but Romero gets behind the shot and comfortably takes the ball in.

The pace in this game has dropped somewhat as United start to take over.

Yeovil still trying to put on a performance for the home fans, but the gulf in quality has manifested itself in the second half.

Man United: Alexis Sanchez makes away after bagging two assists. Jesse Lingard comes in to take over from the new signing.

Pretty decent night for Sanchez overall.

Man United: Romelu Lukaku comes on for Juan Mata.

OFFSIDE!!

Mata looked to have made it 3-0 there. Nice cross from Darmian after collecting a pass from Mctominay.

But the resultant shot from Mata is ruled out for offside.

GOAL!!!

Ander Herrera scores on the end of a counter-attack with a thundering shot into the bottom corner.

Sanchez plays a big role in the score, and feeds the ball to him at the edge of the area for his second assist of the night.

Yeovil fall into a 2-0 deficit.

A chance comes to Shaw, but his shot is blocked down.

Celebrating the lead

Yeovil Town Substitution: Jared Bird makes way for Rhys Browne in the 56th minute.

Still fighting

Early opportunity for Rashford, but Smith gets his body into position to block the shot and put it out for a corner.

Sanchez is down after get a knick on the boot from Sowunmi, who gets a yellow card for the challenge.

And the second half is underway.

Both sides are coming back onto the pitch, and the word is that there are no changes for the second half.

Despite the first half blunder that led to the goal, Yeovil Town are very much in the game and could still snatch an equaliser after the restart.

HT: Marcus Rashford gives Man United a 1-0 lead against Yeovil Town at the break.

1 minute of added time to play here, and crucially, United have the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Jose Mourinho looks satisfied on the sideline.

And that goal comes just in time for half-time. It’s a terrbile blow for the host side after putting together a string of promising attacks.

GOAL!!!!

Marcus Rashford capitalises on a silly mistake in the Yeovil defence. An attack that looked like it was rolling into the keeper’s hands comes to Rashford and he crashes the ball home.

Herrera picks out Sanchez with a pass. His first touch is good but his shot is really lacking in accuracy.

He’s making plenty of chances but can’t take them.

Eye on the ball

He puts alot of power behind the shot but it doesn’t threaten Romero, who probably could have caught it rather than punch it away.

Yeovil gather up the scraps and try to launch another attack as we head into the final few minutes of normal time in the first half.

Michael Carrick is furious after the referee gives a free for his tackle just outside the penalty box.

Yeovil’s Tom James is gearing up to take it.

The Chile International tries to place the shot but credit to Krysiak, he’s equal to the effort and gets down low in time to gather the ball easily.

Yeovil’s Nathan Smith gets a yellow card for upending Sanchez with a badly timed challenge. The free-kick is in a intriguing position. And Sanchez will take it.

Nice link-up play between Sanchez and Juan Mata, but the move is killed off by the Yeovil defence.

The League Two side are more than holding their own against the Premier League giants.

It’s a great occasion for the fans to see this.

CLOSE!!

First real clear-cut chance for Man United falls to McTominay. But his shot from close-range just dribbles the wrong side of the post.

Marcus Rahsford tries to dance through the Yeovil cover, but the ball is poked away.

Lindelof commits another foul in a dangerous area for Yeovil Town to capitalise from. The delivery is good but a Yeovil player falls in the penalty box.

CLOSE!!

Darmian concedes a free-kick in a promising position for Yeovil. The ball is whipped into the box and Sowunmi gets his head on it, but doesn’t make proper contact and Romero gathers possession.

Another great opportunity created by the underdog side this evening.

The pre-match pleasantries

Yeovil Town v Manchester United - Emirates FA Cup - Fourth Round - Huish Park Nick Potts Nick Potts

Sanchez steps up to take United’s first corner of the game but Krysiak collects the ball with ease.

First corner of the game to Yeovil after another pacey run down the channel from Green.

Nice cross in from James of Yeovil Town, but United clear the danger. The hosts are showing well in the opening 10 minutes.

Early chance for Yeovil Town, but it’s kept out by Romero. He kept himself low to keep out the shot.

But a decent effort from Green.

Bit of a mixed reception for Sanchez this evening. A few boos coming from the stand when he’s on the ball.

Nice little flick from Rashford and he earns a free in the process.

Zoko gets an early booking following a challenge on Marcos Rojo.

And we’re off.

A minute’s applause rings around the Somerset stadium in honour of Jimmy Armfield.

The teams are making their way onto the pitch now.

I’m a happy camper!!

Liverpool U23 captain and Ireland U21 International Corey Whelan is also on the Yeovil Town bench, after joining the club on loan earlier this month to help him gain some experience playing senior football.

He previously earned a new contract with the Merseyside club shortly after turning 20.

The Chester-born defender qualifies for the Republic of Ireland through his two Irish parents. His versatility in the back-line makes him a real prospect for the future, and he might get the opportunity to take on some Premier League attackers this evening.

Speaking of Connor Smith, have you had a chance to read Eoin O’Callaghan’s brilliant interview with him on The42?

Here’s a teaser for you, and you can read the article in full here before kick-off:

“But for us lower-league teams, we go into the competition trying to win every game and get as much of a run going as we can and we take it so seriously. You want United to play their big players but if they don’t you start thinking, ‘Hang on, maybe we can get a result’. If they come with all their big-hitters like Pogba and Lukaku, you’re delighted to play against players like that.”

Hello and welcome to The42 coverage of this FA Cup fourth round tie between Yeovil Town and Manchester United.

It’s a massive occasion for the League Two side as they welcome a Premier League club to their grounds in Somerset in a bid to take another step in their FA Cup journey.

As always, we want you to get involved in the coverage by sending us your comments, criticisms and observations in the comment thread below. You can also send your tweets to @Shin_Farrell, who will be guiding you through the game minute-by-minute.

Ireland will win the 6nations and I believe the French game will be Paul O’Connell’s finest 80mins in an Irish jersey. We have a great team, great support and sheer intensity to complete the campaign.

Ireland to win coz we have better players and they are playing on form. Ireland also have better management. I cannot see France winning this one.

    Wont happen I fear.
The squad ultimately has and has always had an underdog loser mentality. In the last 10 years we have totally failed at 3 world cups, lost at least 3 championships and lost 3 easily winnable games against the All Blacks.

Before the start of this 6 nations England and France had both only won 2 more games than us but they have won 4 and 5 championships compared to our puny 1. Not enough players have been capable of following POC and BOD to victory I’m afraid.
I certainly hope Joe Schmidt rids us of this loser mentality.

Ireland usually see their best chance the year we have England & France in Dublin. My worry is that this side have yet to win a tight game, we failed to beat NZ when we had them on the ropes and we failed to drive on and beat England when we were 10 – 3 up in the second half.
We have the team to do it but actually going out and doing it is a different matter.

Scratch the surface and I fear the same inconsistent, underachieving, low-confidence team from the last 4 years will be there.. They need a good start and calm leadership, or else the self-doubt will return and the French will grow in confidence. They were frenetic and insecure in the first half in London. A 10min try-blitz from some unforeseen French bolters and history will repeat itself.

The six nations has it’s own unique scoring system, no bonus points. Directly from the six nations website (http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/championship/rules.php)

The RBS 6 Nations Championship Trophy is presented to the team who earn the most points during the season, with 2 points being awarded for a win, and 1 point for a drawn match.

If two or more teams finish the Championship with the same number points, the winner is decided on match-points difference (subtracting match-points ‘against’ from match-points ‘for’ in all Championship matches). If there is still no winner, then it is awarded to the team who scored the most tries during the Championship.

If after all this a winner still cannot be decided then the Championship is shared between the teams.

England and Ireland are the only form teams and England got that game at home.

Based on Irelands performance this season in the 6 nations we are the form side going into the Paris game. But take into account the all blacks game during the November series which in my opinion was the best 60 minutes of rugby iv seen Ireland play in my lifetime then you would have to say that this irish side are the top northern hempishre side. Yes we lost to England at Twickenham but let’s call a spade a spade we were unlucky that day. Ireland deserve to win the championship and if the french stumble bod and the boys will punish

Without being arrogant or cocky we should be quietly confident about winning this game.
We need a huge performance but the championship is in our hands.
Once the players focus on the job at hand and not get distracted by all the other stuff then we should be fine.
It’s important that we try and take the game to France and control the tempo and pace.
If we can build phases like we did against Italy then I can see the crowd and the French players getting frustrated.
Upfront we can hopefully get an edge as our pack seems like a tighter unit than there’s.
Will be fascinating to see what game plan Schmidt takes into this one as he has had a different plan for every game so far. We were good enough to draw with France on the last 2 occasions and with the way that this squad has developed there is no reason why we can’t go one better.
The harsh lessons learned against NZ and England should help this team to get over the line on this occasion.
    Can’t wait :)
