First big shock of Rio Olympics as Williams sisters crash out

The American sisters lost in straight sets to Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic.

SERENA AND VENUS Williams tasted defeat for the first time in an Olympic doubles match today as they lost in the first round of the women’s doubles in Rio.

Czech Republic’s Lucie Safariva and Barbora Strycova caused a massive shock by beating the three-time Olympic champions in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The Williams sisters were the reigning champions after winning gold at the London Games without losing a single set on their path to glory.

But their title defence was short-lived as the Czech Republic took away the zero in their 15-0 career record at the Olympics.
