During a tempestuous Allianz Hurling League semi-final at Nowlan Park, Fitzgerald was irate when referee Diarmuid Kirwan failed to award a free to Wexford defender James Breen as he attempted to clear the ball.

The Premier had the ball in the net moments later, with Noel McGrath slotting home his first goal of the afternoon.

That prompted a furious Fitzgerald to enter the fray and remonstrate with Kirwan, before he clashed with Niall O’Meara and Jason Forde.
