Wexford forfeit recent game with Shels and receive fine from FAI for rules breach

Debutante goalkeeper, Colum Feeney, was not registered to play in the fixture.

WEXFORD’S 1-1 DRAW with Shelbourne at Ferrycarrig Park on 22 September has been overturned and awarded as a 3-0 victory to Shels due to the home side’s fielding of an ineligible player.

The club were yesterday advised by the FAI Disciplinary Committee that they had breached Clause 14.14 of the Participation Agreement, claiming in a statement that they had been fined and forfeit the drawn fixture.

The FAI confirmed the news in a statement of their own this evening.

“The FAI Disciplinary Committee has ruled that Wexford FC be fined and forfeit their recent game against Shelbourne in the SSE Airtricity League First Division,” it read.

Wexford fielded an ineligible player in the clash with Shelbourne on Friday, September 22 at Ferrycarrig Park and therefore the original 1-1 result is now deemed to be a 3-0 victory to Shelbourne.

“As a result, the First Division table has changed slightly with Shelbourne moving onto 37 points.”

Wexford yesterday revealed that the ineligible player was teenage goalkeeper Colum Feeney, who made his debut during the fixture.

“The player in question was our Under 17 goalkeeper, whom we had applied to register to the senior squad last week in advance of the game, when it became known that our first team goalkeeper was ill,” read a statement from the club. “Regrettably, we were advised that it was too late to do so and due to an administrative error, this information was not passed on to the team management.”

The club then apologised to its management, players, and supporters.
