Wexford willing to delay quarter-final but Camogie Association don't want another fixture change

The winners of the playoff will now have to play two games in three days.

THE CAMOGIE ASSOCIATION have turned down Wexford’s offer to put the All-Ireland quarter-final back by a week, it has been revealed.

Clare and Dublin will now have the chance to meet in a playoff after the governing body performed a u-turn on the decision to determine the winners by tossing a coin.

However, the playoff is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Semple Stadium, giving the winners just 48 hours to recover and prepare for a quarter-final tie with Wexford on Bank Holiday Monday.

Speaking to Off the Ball on Newstalk this evening, Camogie Association CEO Joan O’Flynn admitted the Model County had said they would be happy to reschedule the fixture and play it on Saturday 8 August but the offer was turned down.

The offer from Wexford was a conditional one on the basis that the semi-finals would also be moved to 22 August.

However, O’Flynn said the decision was made to avoid disassembling the fixture programme any further while insisting all parties have now agreed to play the matches as scheduled this weekend.

But the President of the Women’s Gaelic Players Association has expressed her disappointment at the quick turnaround the players will be forced to endure.

“When I saw it this morning my heart skipped to be honest. I was a bit disappointed to be honest when I saw the very quick turnaround. I immediately got in touch with our rep from both counties,” Aoife Lane said.

“They were so upset and disappointed last night and today, that their immediate reaction was that ‘we’re getting a chance to win on the field of play’ and that was their ultimate outcome.

“The turnaround is very quick. It’s not an ideal welfare issue and in fairness, Wexford, as far as I have known, were willing to play next Saturday. There was a little bit of disappointment on our behalf. It’s a result, it’s a positive outcome but it’s not the ideal outcome.”

Clare and Dublin had been due to draw lots today to see who would take on Wexford after finishing level on points in Group 2, having also drawn 1-8 to 1-8 earlier this year.
