Liverpool were never interested in Depay, says Rodgers

The 21-year-old was courted by Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Liverpool before moving to Manchester United.

LIVERPOOL MANAGER Brendan Rodgers has claimed that the Reds were never interested in new Manchester United signing Memphis Depay.

United confirmed on Wednesday that the Dutch winger will join Louis van Gaal’s side from PSV Eindhoven this summer for a fee of £22.3 million.

It’s understood that Liverpool were also in the race for Depay, with Rodgers calling the Netherlands international a “very talented player” in April. But the Liverpool boss has now denied that the club were ever looking to capture the 21-year-old.

“It wasn’t something that we were ever interested in,” Rodgers insisted when asked about Depay today. ”We already have four wingers at the club.”

Arsene Wenger meanwhile. passed up the chance to compete with Manchester United for Memphis Depay because Arsenal have “plenty” of players in the Dutchman’s position.

When asked why Arsenal didn’t move for Depay, Wenger replied: “I like the player but that’s a position where we have plenty.”

The Frenchman also reiterated that Arsenal will be active in the summer transfer window but insists he will only sign players who will drastically improve his squad.

“We have a squad of top quality,” Wenger added. “If we can strengthen our squad then of course we will do it.”
