Weidman withdraws from next month's UFC middleweight title rematch

The former champion was due to face Luke Rockhold in the main event at UFC 199 on 4 June.

IT LOOKS LIKE Chris Weidman will have to wait a little longer for his chance to reclaim the UFC middleweight title.

According to a report from FloCombat’s Jeremy Botter, an injury has forced Weidman to withdraw from his main-event meeting with reigning 185lbs champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 in Inglewood on 4 June.

Weidman was aiming to avenge his defeat to Rockhold at UFC 194 in Las Vegas last December, when he relinquished the middleweight belt after being stopped in the fourth round by his fellow American.

Nothing official has come from the UFC just yet so there has been no word about a potential replacement for Rockhold, or if the organisation will instead opt to reschedule his inaugural title defence.

Following his impressive victory over Vitor Belfort on Saturday night, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza would appear to be the front-runner if a new opponent is to be drafted in.

However, Michael Bisping — who picked up a career-best win against Anderson Silva last time out — has already taken to Twitter to offer his services.

UFC 199 is also scheduled to feature a bantamweight title bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, plus a host of other big fights including Max Holloway vs. Ricardo Lamas, Dan Henderson vs. Hector Lombard, Dustin Poirier vs. Bobby Green and BJ Penn vs. Cole Miller.
