TV footage shows a green light being directed towards Wayne Rooney during the fourth-round tie at Old Trafford.

The laser appeared on the Man United captain’s face as he prepared to take his penalty after the sides played out a goalless draw.

Rooney’s spot-kick was saved by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias with the Championship outfit going on to win 3-1.

The FA say they are aware of the incident and will now look into the matter. The penalty shoot-out took place at the end where the 10,000 visiting fans were housed.

Nonetheless, the incident doesn’t take anything away from Boro’s win at the Theatre of Dreams as Louis van Gaal’s side were once again humbled by Football League opposition.

Last year, United were knocked out of the League Cup by MK Dons.

Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young all missed from the spot last night. Grant Leadbitter, Stewart Downing and Ben Gibson successfully converted for Boro to set up a last-eight home tie with Everton.
