As it happened: Watford v Man Utd, Premier League

Jose Mourinho’s men suffered a third defeat in just over a week, as Watford picked up all three points at Vicarage Road.

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of the first Premier League game of the day, as Manchester United travel to Vicarage Road to take on Watford.

One enforced changed for Watford with Sebastian Prödl coming in for the injured Younès Kaboul at the heart of the defence.

There are five changes to the United team that lost to Feyenoord. With Valencia and Shaw returning at full-back, for Darmian and Rojo.

While further up the pitch Fellaini, Rooney and Ibrahimovic replace Schneiderlin, Herrera and Mata in a very attack-minded side picked by Mourinho.

Some encouraging stats for United fans from our friends at Opta:

Mourinho says he is not under pressure – do you believe him?

The visitors kick-off the game as they aim to get back to winning ways.

It looks as if United have opted to move to a 4-1-4-1 formation with Fellaini in a holding role. Rooney joins Pogba in midfield with Rashford on the left, Martial to the right and Ibrahimovic leading the line.

5 minutes into the game and it is yet to settle. Smalling with the only chance of the game so far, but his header from the centre of the box goes harmlessly wide.

Valencia makes are darting run down the right flank, but fails to get his cross into the box with Holebas providing good defensive cover for Watford.

A long throw from Holebas looks for Deeney in the United box, and replays show Fellaini was lucky not to give away a penalty with the Belgian pulling the striker’s shirt.

CLOSE! A diagonal free-kick from Holebas finds the head of Prödl, whose header goes across the United goal, with Deeney flinging his leg in an attempt to knock it on target, but fortunately for the away side, he fails to make any connection.

CHANCE! A harmless long ball from Prödl looks to be going into the hands of de Gea but no communication between the goalkeeper and Chris Smalling sees him fumble the ball. It falls kindly for Ighalo, who somehow knocks the ball wide with the goal gaping.

SAVE! What a header and what a save. A powerful header from Deeney from Janmaat’s cross is brilliantly saved by de Gea in the United goal. One-way traffic, so far.

MISS! Ibrahimovic with a glorious chance, but somehow knocks it wide.

Rooney set Rashford free down the right flank, his deflected cross falls perfectly for the Swede on the far post, but surprisingly fails to find the target. United’s best chance of the game so far.

Photographic evidence this man IS playing. Pogba has been a peripheral figure, so far.

Stoppage in play as Janmaat and Martial receive treatment for a clash of heads, but both return to the pitch.

CLOSE! Pogba has a shot from distance that rattles to the crossbar.

Wonderful technique from the Frenchman who shifts the ball to his right foot, who hits a powerful strike that swerves and dips to beat Gomes, but not the crossbar.

GOAL! Watford 1-0 Man Utd (Capoue 34′)

Watford take the lead – Capoue with the goal.

Martial is tackled on the edge of the box by Britos after labouring on the ball, and it falls perfectly for Janmaat, who cuts the ball back for Capoue who fires the ball past de Gea, who opts to go with his feet to try and save it, rather than his hands.

SUB: Martial who had a clash of heads earlier, is replaced by Ashley Young. Important to note it was Martial that lost the ball that led to the goal – should he have been taken off earlier?

CHANCE! Young plays in Shaw, who cuts inside but his shot with his right foot is blocked for a corner, that comes to nothing.

CHANCE! A superb recovery tackle from Prödl denies Ibrahimovic giving United an equaliser, after he broke clear of the Watford defence that failed to catch him offside.

SAVE! de Gea easlily saves a Holebas free-kick from 25 yards, after Pogba clumsily fouled Capoue.

WIDE! Good play between Pogba and Rashford, the England striker opens up his body on the edge of the box, but goes well wide.

Half-time: Watford 1-0 Man Utd

Here are the half-time stats, as Watford go into the break with a deserved lead.

Stats

Capoue has now scored four goals in first five Premier League games of the season.

Second-half has started – can United find a way back?

It looks as if Rooney will play behind Ibrahimovic in the second period, with Pogba joining Fellaini in a holding midfield role.

WIDE! Ibrahimovic, who has cut a frustrated figure, pulls his shot from the edge of the box well wide of the Watford goal.

SUB: Janmaat, who fell awkwardly after a challenge from Pogba, is replaced by Amrabat.

The Dutch defender was also involved in the clash of heads with Martial in the first-half – both have now been taken off.

Will this stat change at the final whistle?

If you thought United were going to start the second-period putting Watford under pressure from the outset, you would have been wrong.

An hour gone – 10 shots and still none on target.

Jeers swirl around Vicarage Road as Rooney attempts to cross a ball in from the side, without any pressure – but puts it high and wide.

GOAL! Watford 1-1 Man Utd (Rashford 62′)

That man Rashford, who found himself in the box after being out wide for so much of the game, stabs home from close range after a good run from Ibrahimovic.

Hard to argue:

SUB: Just after that goal Mata replaced Valencia, with Young moving to right-back.

United seem to have a bit more swagger about them now playing further up the pitch, and are probably favourites to go on and win this match.

A free-kick from Holebas out wide, goes across the United goal after a flick on in the box, but United manage to scramble the ball clear.

BOOKING: A yellow card for Pogba after a push on Behrami.

Ibrahimovic’s free-kick on the edge of the box tamely hits the Watford wall, with the home side clearing their lines.

Booking: Holebas and Britos picks up Watford’s first yellow cards of the game.

SAVE! Ibrahimovic’s goal-bound header is well saved by Gomes, after Fellaini found the striker with a fine diagonal pass.

Good commanding goalkeeping from Gomes, after he punches a dangerous free-kick from Mata clear from the Watford box, and wins a free-kick of his own in the process.

SUB: A second change for Watford as Zuñiga takes the place of Capoue.

GOAL: Watford 2-1 Man Utd (Zuñiga 83′)

Zuñiga was on the pitch for less than a minute, and gives the home side the lead for the second time.

Amrabat finds Pereyra in the box with perfectly-weighted ball, who in turn picks out the Colombian on the edge of the box to bend the ball into the far corner past de Gea.

SUB: Immediate change for United as Memphis comes on for Shaw.

Booking: Deeney picks up a yellow card after a foul on Mata.

Booking: Another yellow – this time for Fellaini.

Booking: The substitute Memphis is shown a yellow card.

Sub: Striker Ighalo is replaced by Isaac Success – make your own pun, if you wish.

Frustration is growing within the United team as they can’t seem to get out of their own half. Four minutes of added time to save themselves.

The last time Watford beat Manchester United? September 1986.

Watford more than happy to play out the rest of the match in the corner – with the home side knocking the ball of United players for throw-ins and corner kicks.

Booking: Yellow card for Rooney as United struggle to win the ball back.

Penalty for Watford as Fellaini fouls Zuñiga in the box after good play by Success.

Goal: Watford 3-1 Man Utd (Deeney 90′)

Deeney smashes the ball down the middle from the spot as United are on the verge of losing their third game in just over a week.

FT: Watford 3-1 Man Utd

Early days but a terrible week for United is made worse, as Watford deservedly pick up the three points in the early kick-off. Mourinho’s side are now six points behind rivals Man City at the top of the table.
