DUNDALK MAY BE having a disappointing season by their high standards, but it has not stopped Patrick McEleney from impressing.

The 24-year-old former Ireland underage international originally caught the eye with Derry City, leading to interest on both sides of the Irish Sea — the youngster came close to joining Peterborough at one point.

The attacking midfielder has impressed since joining Dundalk in 2016, stepping up particularly in light of the well-documented departures of some high-profile talents in pre-season.

McEleney is no stranger to scoring spectacular goals, as anyone who remembers his brilliant effort against St Pat’s back in March will know.

On Friday, he was at it again, registering his fifth goal of the season — a delightful chip following an impressive solo run — amid Dundalk’s 6-0 demolition of Drogheda.
