MANCHESTER UNITED play Galatasaray tonight, knowing they will progress to the next stage of the Champions League regardless of the result.
However, such happy circumstances haven’t always been associated with the Turkish opposition, as far as Alex Ferguson’s men are concerned.
They have played the same opponents five times in the past competitively, and have only won two of those games.
The video below recounts their famous encounters in 1993, the away leg of which Gary Neville describes as “the most hostile I’ve ever seen”.
The first leg saw United take a two-goal lead, before a Galatasaray comeback ultimately secured them a 3-3 draw (cue: a Turkish commentator going mental). The return game in Turkey featured the infamous ‘Welcome to Hell’ banner, as Eric Cantona was sent off, Bryan Robson was struck by a policeman and United exited the competition on away goals, as they could only draw 0-0 on the night.
The details, with interviews from some of those involved, including Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs, are revisited below.

Starting to get sick of the excuses and constant attempts to put a positive spin on things. That Connacht team was good enough to grind out a win at home but they didn’t do it because if poor decision making and poor skills, coaches have to do better
When the language changes from ‘intent’ and ‘more clinical’ to ‘work on’, we know Ulster have won something.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: Excuse me, Connacht
