UL HELD TOO much firepower for former champions IT Tralee in a good contest played in wind and rain on the 4G pitch at the Limerick complex.
A goal from midfielder Conor Lowney after a quick free after 17 minutes pushed the Kerry college into the lead for the only time in the contest.
UL, under the management of former DCU winner Brian Carson, did not panic and the sides turned around level at 0-9 to 1-6 at the break.
A couple of massive downpours made conditions difficult but there were some quality scores from both sides.
UL got an edge after the restart and while Shane Killoran’s point was cancelled by Conor O’Driscoll, the home side went in front with a pointed free from Kevin Moore after 39 minutes and never surrendered the lead after that.
Killoran put them five points up with a goal after 44 minutes and while Paudie Quill cancelled that at the other end almost immediately, it was UL who pulled away and the win was wrapped up when Bryan O’Shea found the net in the closing stages to book a tie with Queen’s in the next round.
Tralee finished with 14 men when centre-back Cian Horan was sent off late in the game.
