The UFC's middleweight champion is backing Conor McGregor to beat Jose Aldo

Chris Weidman expects an Irish victory on 11 July.

CONOR McGREGOR HAS never lacked confidence, but receiving the seal of approval from a reigning UFC champion certainly won’t do him any harm.

Having ended Anderson Silva’s seven-year reign at the top of the middleweight division, reigning 185lbs champion Chris Weidman knows a thing or two about what it takes to win UFC gold.

With Conor McGregor and UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo currently involved in a promotional tour ahead of this July’s title bout at UFC 189, Weidman was asked for his thoughts on the most eagerly-anticipated bout in the history of the 145lbs division.

“It’s pretty cool to be on the other side and watching these guys go through the ringer and be on this tour,” Weidman told the UFC’s Megan Olivi. “You’ve got two guys who really hate each other and it’s just a really exciting fight that I’m looking forward to.

“You’ve got a really confident guy in Conor McGregor and then you’ve got a really experienced guy, who’s also confident, in Jose Aldo. Conor McGregor is extremely confident and big for the weight, and I think he’s going to end up winning the fight.”
