Whittaker overcomes Romero after Amanda Nunes pulls out of UFC 213 main event

The Brazilian reigning UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion was taken to hospital owing to an unspecified illness.

ROBERT WHITTAKER PREVAILED in the main event at UFC 213 in Las Vegas last night at the T-Mobile Arena.

The New Zealand native won the UFC middleweight title after beating Yoel Romero via unanimous decision.

Whittaker, who has now won his last eight fights, is next expected to face Michael Bisping, once the Cypriot-born fighter recovers from a knee injury.

Romero and Whittaker were fighting in the new main event, as bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes pulled out of her title fight against Valentina Shevchenko late on, having being taken to hospital due to an unspecified illness earlier this weekend.

Meanwhile, in the evening’s co-main event, Alistair Overeem narrowly beat Fabricio Werdum via majority decision.

The 37-year-old London-born fighter now has six wins in his last seven bouts.

In addition, Curtis Blaydes overcame Daniel Omielanczuk in a unanimous decision.

It was the Polish fighter’s third consecutive loss, with all the judges scoring the fight 30-27 in favour of Blaydes.

Elsewhere, Anthony Pettis won via unanimous decision in his lightweight bout with Jim Miller.

The American fighter dug deep to overcome the 33-year-old New Jersey native, winning 30-27 on each of the judges’ cards.

Finally, in the only other event on the main card, Rob Font proved too strong for Brazilian fighter Douglas Silva de Andrade.

Font secured a victory via second-round submission, after locking his opponent in a guillotine choke, causing de Andrade to tap out.
