CORK CITY HAD to settle for a 1-1 draw at Turner’s Cross against KR Reykjavik in this evening’s Europa League first-round qualifier.
The hosts started well and took the lead on the 20-minute mark, when Alan Bennett headed home Billy Dennehy’s free kick.
Cork’s lead lasted just under five minutes however, as Oskar Oern Hauksson’s header from a corner got the Icelandic team back in the game.
The League of Ireland side took a while to recover from this setback, however they increased the pressure on the visitors’ goal as the game developed, wasting a number of good chances late on.
Nevertheless, John Caulfield’s men were ultimately forced to settle for a 1-1 draw, with the tie all to play for in the second leg.
Meanwhile, UCD secured a highly encouraging 1-0 win over F91 Dudelange of Luxembourg in the Belfield Bowl this evening.
The game was preceded by a respectfully observed minute’s silence for the young people who tragically lost their lives in Berkeley recently.
In front of a crowd of 1,075, Ryan Swan’s goal on the brink of half-time gave the Students a serious boost in the game.
And the First Division side ultimately held on for the victory, putting them in an excellent position ahead of next week’s second leg.
In addition, Diafra Sakho scored twice as West Ham eased to a 3-0 first-leg Europa League win over minnows Lusitans.
The Andorran side managed to frustrate their Premier League opponents until the 40th minute, when the previously profligate Sakho opened the scoring.
The Senegal international doubled his tally before the break and West Ham captain James Tomkins ensured the Londoners began their final season at Upton Park with the anticipated victory.
New West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was introduced to a sell-out crowd before kick-off, but academy boss Terry Westley took charge of a team blending youth and experience on the night – including Reece Oxford, who became the club’s youngest ever player.
