MONAGHAN HELD OFF a late Down fightback to claim a second successive Division 1 victory in the Allianz football league by 0-13 to 0-11 in Clones this afternoon.
Down entered the game on the back of a hiding they suffered against Donegal last Saturday night but they restored pride today.
Defeat was still ultimately their lot and their clash with Kerry in Newry on 28 February looks like a key encounter in the relegation battle given both sides are still pointless.
Monaghan are looking ahead to their trip to Croke Park on 27 February in confidence after securing the spoils here in the wake of last Sunday’s success away to Roscommon.
Down started brightest to go in front 0-5 to 0-2 with Monaghan recovering then before the interval to forge a 0-9 to 0-6 advantage.

That position was further embellished when they went ahead 0-12 to 0-7 midway through the second-half. Down powered back into contention and cut the gap to two points by the final whistle but Monaghan clung on for success.

Ryan McAnespie, Shane Carey, Conor McManus and Owen Duffy all weighed in with 0-2 apiece for Monaghan while Connaire Harrison grabbed 0-4 for Down and Danny O’Hanlon weighed in with 0-3 for the Mourne men.
In Division 2, Tyrone went top of the table with a 1-11 to 1-9 victory away to Galway. In truth it was a more comfortable success for Mickey Harte’s side than that margin suggests as 14-man Galway struck 1-3 without reply at the end of the game in Salthill.
Tyrone were ahead 1-6 to 0-5 at the interval with Tiernan McCann striking home their goal and matters got worse for Galway in the second-half when Paul Conroy was sent-off.
Tyrone surged further ahead by 1-11 to 0-6 approaching the finale but Damien Comer, who hit the net twice against Laois last season, found the net again for Galway to inject hope into their challenge.
Galway couldn’t draw level though as Tyrone secured back-to-back victories. Ronan O’Neill, Darren McCurry, Lee Brennan and Mark Bradley kicked a brace of points apiece for Tyrone while Eamonn Brannigan and Eddie Hoare struck 0-3 apiece for Galway.
In the same division Fermanagh grabbed their first win of the campaign when they saw off 14-man Meath by 0-10 to 0-6 in Enniskillen.
The dismissal of Andrew Tormey in the 23rd minute was a major setback for a Meath team that trailed 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval.

Meath did recover well in the second-half and went in front 0-6 to 0-5 at one stage. However they failed to score after that with Fermanagh kicking five points on the spin to take the spoils.
Tomas Corrigan hit 0-4 for Pete McGrath’s side while Sean Quigley struck 0-3 and Seanie Tobin was Meath’s top scorer with 0-3.
