TYRONE ARE ON the brink of a quick return to Division 1 of the Allianz football league while there were dramatic draws in Portlaoise and the Athletic Grounds today.
Those were the main talking points after the Division 2 action with Mickey Harte’s Tyrone side claiming their fifth successive win to almost guarantee a return to the top flight after last year’s relegation.
In Navan this afternoon, Tyrone saw off Meath by 1-17 to 1-11 in Páirc Tailteann despite Meath getting off to a great start with Mickey Newman finding the net.
But Tyrone responded with a goal of their own from Ronan O’Neill and they were in front 1-10 to 1-6 at the break.

Meath battled hard to cut the deficit to two points during the second-half but Tyrone finished out the game in style. Newman struck 1-7 for Meath while O’Neill (1-4), Peter Harte (0-3) and Sean Cavanagh (0-3) were Tyrone’s top scorers.
Derry put five goals past Laois in O’Moore Park but the teams still finished level at 5-10 to 1-22. Paul Kingston netted early on for a Laois team that suffered the setback of seeing midfielder Kieran Lillis depart with a serious leg injury.
Derry recovered to only trail 2-6 to 1-10 at the interval with Danny Heavron slotting home two goals. John O’Loughlin was in outstanding form for Laois but they shipped more goals in the second-half with Christopher Bradley bagging two and a late one from Mark Lynch helped deliver the draw.
A last-gasp goal by Galway’s Danny Cummins secured a 1-15 apiece draw for them against Armagh. The teams had been level at 0-9 each at half-time with Stefan Campbell hitting 0-7 for the Orchard County.
Matters got even better in the second-half for Armagh as Campbell netted from the penalty spot to provide a boost after Ethan Rafferty had been dismissed for Kieran McGeeney’s men.
But Galway kept battling and were rewarded with the goal for that late draw.
