TYRONE WON A fifth successive Dr McKenna Cup trophy after a 1-22 to 1-17 extra-time win over Derry in Athletic Grounds, Armagh this evening.
A Ryan Bell goal helped Derry earn a 1-5 to 0-4 half-time lead in front of an attendance of 7,143 spectators.
Tyrone hit back after the break, however, as points from Connor McAliskey, Lee Brennan and Conor Meyler kept the scores close at 1-8 to 0-8.
Further points from Brennan, Darren McCurry and Niall Sludden saw Tyrone draw level with the scores 1-9 to 0-12.
Conor Kearns and Enda Lynn helped Derry regain the advantage, and Tyrone’s problems were exacerbated when Ronan McNamee was dismissed for a second yellow card.
However, Mickey Harte’s side showed admirable resilience, as late scores from McCurry and Meyler sent the game into extra-time.
And with momentum on their side, Tyrone secured a commanding lead thereafter, as points from Brennan, Cathal McShane and McAliskey, as well as a McCurry penalty, helped them seal a hard-earned win.
