Trapattoni vows to fight on as Ireland boss, despite Austria setback

The Italian dismissed suggestions he should consider his future in the wake of tonight’s disappointing result.

IRELAND MANAGER GIOVANNI Trapattoni dismissed suggestions he should consider his future as Ireland manager, following tonight’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Austria.

Speaking to RTE, Trapattoni insisted Ireland were still in “a good position” and suggested the country should not strive to match the ambitions of the top-tier footballing nations.

The veteran Italian boss also admitted that, though his side were unlucky, Austria’s point was well earned, saying:

“Austria did not deserve lose, [but] we had a huge chance to win.”

He also rejected the suggestion that Wes Hoolahan should have been brought on in the final minutes.

“The last 20 minutes we were tired in midfield. At this moment we needed the midfield.

“After 90 minutes, you can say what you want. This was not easy.”

When asked if he should consider his future in light of tonight’s disappointing result, he responded.

“Why? You remember, we are Ireland, we are in a good position.”

Meanwhile, Man of the Match Shane Long said he was “devastated” following the outcome of the game, and claimed his side “deserved three points”.

He admitted qualification would now be difficult, and added:

“We need to be beating Austria. I’m sure we’ll look back at it as three points dropped.”
