Fernando Torres penalty seals Atletico's place in Champions League quarter-finals

Mario Suarez’ deflected first-half effort for Atletico secured the hosts a 1-0 win on the night and levelled the tie on aggregate.

LAST SEASON’S FINALISTS Atletico Madrid edged through to the Champions League quarter-finals as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 on penalties after the last 16 tie ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Mario Suarez’ deflected first-half effort for Atletico secured the hosts a 1-0 win on the night and levelled the tie on aggregate.

Suarez’ effort ended Atletico’s goal drought in the competition at just shy of two hours and was the first goal Bayer had conceded in six matches.

Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout, with the subsequent Leverkusen miss sending the Spanish side through.
