CAPTAIN DIARMAID KELLY led by example in Thurles for Limerick this evening to send beaten 2015 Electric Ireland Munster and All-Ireland finalists Tipperary crashing out of this year’s competition.
Limerick recovered from last week’s one-point defeat against Clare to shock the Premier County in tonight’s provincial playoff at Semple Stadium, a victory that sets up a clash against Waterford for the Treaty boys next week.
For Tipp, the season is over and they could have no excuses after registering 12 wides on the night – eight in the second half alone.
As they pushed forward desperately after half-time, Limerick could have inflicted further punishment but the visitors wasted three glorious goal chances before Eoin O’Mahony’s goal in the final minute wrapped it up.
O’Mahony finished with 1-4 on the night for Limerick but he was eclipsed in the scoring stakes by skipper Kelly, who bagged 2-2, a haul evenly split between both halves.
Limerick led by five points at half-time, 1-7 to 0-5, and it was a blistering start that handed the Shannonsiders that cushion.
With eleven minutes on the watch, the visitors were 1-4 to 0-0 clear before Tipp registered their opening score three minutes later, from a Michael Barlow free.
Anthony Barrett had Limerick, playing with the breeze in the opening half, a point clear with just 25 seconds played before Kelly waltzed through from the left touchline to bag a fifth-minute goal.
Further points followed from the impressive O’Mahony, Kelly and O’Mahony again as Limerick roared out of the traps.
But Tipp, who had manager Mick O’Sullivan sent to the stand in the second half, fought their way back into contention and were just three points behind approaching the break, 0-5 to 1-5, before Limerick hit back with a brace from O’Mahony, both scores from superb long-range placed balls.
Tipp’s leading scorer John Lyons pointed a free for Tipp on the resumption but Limerick were back in business in the 34th minute when Kelly netted a penalty, awarded for a foul on Seamus Hurley that looked right on the edge of the large parallelogram.

Limerick had further chances to make the game safe but Tipp were back to within two points late on as they kept plugging away.
Hurley pointed with five minutes remaining to hand Limerick a three-point lead again before O’Mahony lashed a drive into the top corner of Jack Dolan’s net.
Tipp managed just two points from play on the night – one in each half as they crashed out at an early juncture, this defeat ending their 2016 campaign following last week’s reverse in Cork.
