Tipperary decider set to feature the champions and club in first final in 78 years

The final takes place in Semple Stadium next Sunday

IT WILL BE a case of familiarity against novelty in this year’s Tipperary senior hurling final after today’s semi-final clashes.

For kingpins Thurles Sarsfields, it is qualification for another final after their 1-22 to 0-15 semi-final success over Clonoulty-Rossmore. They will be bidding for three-in-a-row in the decider and their sixth title in eight years. It marks the 12th time in the last 17 years that Thurles Sarsfields will be contesting the biggest day in the Tipperary club hurling calendar.

In contrast for North Tipperary club Kildangan, it promises to be a huge occasion. They saw off Killenaule by 2-16 to 0-13 in the second semi-final this afternoon and now they will sample county senior hurling final day for the first time since 1938.

After causing an upset with last week’s quarter-final victory over Drom-Inch, Kildangan continued their progress and ending a 78-year wait for an appearance in a decider is a major milestone.

Two goals by Joe Gallagher, one in each half, were instrumental to their success. They were in front 1-9 to 0-8 at the break before finishing strongly in the final quarter with Gallagher’s second goal arriving in the 50th minute.

In the first game, Thurles Sarsfields showed all their class to claim a ten-point success. They were ahead 0-13 to 0-8 at the break before Richie Ruth struck a second-half goal.

At the opposite end, Thurles Sarsfields goalkeeper Patrick McCormack saved a penalty from Clonoulty’s Timmy Hammersley and they ran out deserving victors.
