3 Irishmen are one step away from a place at snooker's World Championships

There was bad news for two legends of the game in round two at Ponds Forge, however.

KEN DOHERTY, FERGAL O’Brien and Joe Swail are all still in the running for a place at the World Championships at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Swail and O’Brien both had hard-fought wins in the second round at Ponds Forge, prevailing 10-9 and 10-8 over Dominic Dale and Chris Wakelin respectively.

Meanwhile, Doherty, who was given a tough test by 10-time ladies champion Reanne Evans in the first round, beat Lee Walker 10-6 to advance to the final qualifier.

There was bad news for two legends of the game, however, as Steve Davis and Jimmy White both lost out in round two, with the former being thrashed 10-1 by Kurt Maflin, while White was lost 10-8 against Matthew Selt.
