Thomas Barr delivers big finish to take third place in his first Diamond League of the season

The Waterford native impressed in a quick race in Norway.

THOMAS BARR CONJURED a powerful finish to claim third place in the 400m hurdles at his first Diamond League race of the season in Oslo.

The Waterford native, who finished fourth in last year’s Olympic Games in Rio, was drawn in lane one so had it all to do from the start.

But, Barr dug deep to rack up a time of 48.95 – a season’s best for the 24-year-old.

It was a solid field and some – including Olympic champion Keron Clermont from the United States – found it tough.

Much to the delight of the home crowd, it was Norwegian Karsten Warholm who claimed victory in a new national record of 48.25.

Meanwhile, there was a familiar face in second place. Yasmani Copollo – who pipped Barr to the bronze medal in Brazil – edged him again here in a time of 48.44.
