Kinvara youngster Whelan continued his recent superb form as he shot 0-5 in their victory over Dublin, matching the scoring total he had registered in the league final success over Tipperary.
Whelan’s Galway team-mates Joe Canning and Aidan Harte were also nominated by RTÉ pundits Ger Loughnane and Eddie Brennan.
In the other main match yesterday, Tyrone comfortably cruised past Derry at Celtic Park and their midfielder Conall McCann bagged 0-2 as part of a standout showing in his first championship start.
The Killyclogher club man was joined in the running by Tyrone’s lynchpin Sean Cavanagh and Derry’s Enda Lynn, but got the nod from the punditry trio of Tomás Ó Sé, Rory Kavanagh and Ciaran Whelan.
