Welsh champions The New Saints surpass Johan Cruyff’s Ajax for record wins

Last night saw a 44-year-old record for most consecutive wins broken.

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE champions The New Saints ended 2016 on a high as they broke a 44-year-old record for the most consecutive wins in top-flight football last night.

Their 2-0 win at Cefn Druids was their 27th in-a-row in all competitions, one more than the longest winning streak set by Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens and Arie Haan’s Ajax in 1971/72.

The New Saints have won all 21 of their league games this season, along with four in two Welsh cups and two in the Scottish Challenge Cup, in which they were invited to play.

Currently 21 points clear at the top of the Welsh Premier League, they are the only full-time team in the competition.

Their domestic domination is clearly evident, winning eight titles in the last 11 seasons. The past two seasons have also seen them take home the Welsh domestic treble.

Scottish fifth-tier side East Kilbride actually went on a longer run earlier this season, with 30 back-to-back wins. They received 27 crates of beer from Ajax in recognition of the feat as they surpassed the Dutch club’s record.

The official record however can only be set by teams playing in their country’s top-tier competition.
