Norwich fans were angry at the decision to award the spot kick, but replays proved the referee correct, following Andre Wisdom’s poor challenge on Borini.
The Black Cats then doubled their advantage early in the second half, as Jermaine Defoe slid the ball home following Borini’s pinpoint delivery.
Duncan Watmore then put the icing on the cake in second-half stoppage time, as he latched on to Sebastien Larsson’s through ball, before rounding goalkeeper John Ruddy and slotting the ball home
Irish internationals Wes Hoolahan and John O’Shea began on the bench for their respective sides, while Robbie Brady started but was replaced by Nathan Redmond at half-time.
Both Hoolahan and O’Shea were subsequently introduced off the bench in the second half, as Sunderland earned an important three points. As a result of today’s outcome, Sam Allardyce’s side are now just a point behind Norwich with a game in hand.
