Two of Ireland's top boxers progress at European Games

IRELAND’S ADAM NOLAN secured a convincing win and earned a place in the last 16 at the 2015 European Games in Baku today.

The Wexford native fought Albania’s Alban Beqiri and was backed by all three judges, prevailing 30-27 on each of their scorecards.

Nolan, who represented Ireland at the 2012 Olympics, now faces Italy’s Dario Morello at 5pm (Irish time) on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, another Irish athlete, Michael O’Reilly, enjoyed similar success against Croatia’s Sanjin Pol Vrgoc today.

The 22-year-old was deemed the victor by all three judges, with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-25.

He now faces Emir Sabotic of Montenegro in the last 16 on Sunday (11.15am Irish time).

Belfast native Sean McComb will be hoping to continue Ireland’s success against Tymur Beliak of Ukraine tomorrow morning (8.30am Irish time).

Furthermore, in non-boxing news, Longford native Derek Burnett finished joint-eighth out of 32 in Men’s Trap earlier today in Baku, failing to secure a place in the semi-finals by just two points in the process.
