The 23-year-old secured 30% of a public vote to edge him ahead of England’s primary weapon Billy Vunipola who won 27%. George North came in third with 11.6%.

Ireland’s highest-placed player in the vote was scrum-half Conor Murray, who came in fourth with 6.48% of the poll while Jonathan Sexton was behind Jack Nowell, Sergio Parisse and Guilhem Guiado with 3.23%.

Hogg was electric throughout Scotland’s campaign and although he couldn’t help his nation to more than two wins, his line-breaks and off-loads brought some much needed electricity to an otherwise drab tournament.

Hogg takes over the crown from former Ireland captain Paul O’Connell and is the first Scotsman to win the gong in the 12 years it has taken its current form.
