Steven Gerrard rolled the years back last night by scoring a textbook goal for the LA Galaxy

The team made light work of Real Salt Lake in what proved a one-sided affair in California.

IT HAD BEEN a mixed night for Steven Gerrard.

After just six minutes of the LA Galaxy’s clash with Real Salt Lake, the veteran midfielder had a great chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

But, he was denied by Nick Rimando.

Ten minutes later, RSL were in front thanks to Juan Manuel Martinez and it seemed like Gerrard’s miss would come back to haunt his side.

But he need not have worried.

By half-time, the Galaxy led 4-1 as Gyasi Zardes, Mike Magee, Emmanuel Boateng and Gio dos Santos all found the net.

The latter’s strike, in particular, was pretty special.

Gerrard did get in on the act late on, after RSL had pulled a goal back.

In injury-time, he latched onto Ashley Cole’s cross-field ball and bamboozled two defenders with a simple dummy before calmly slotting past Rimando from close range.

Vintage Gerrard and his first of the new MLS season.
