IT WAS THE photo that captured some of the magic from Stephanie Roche’s dream night. Few would have thought when she scored that rocket for Peamount United that one year later she would be mixing with football royalty at the Ballon d’Or.
She ultimately lost out in the Puskas Award to James Rodriguez but in the aftermath a lot of people enjoyed this photo of Roche walking by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Roche was on The Late Late Show tonight speaking about the famous snap that made the front page of a lot of newspapers.
“There might have been something on the ground that caught their eye,” Roche laughed.
“My friends texted me after the awards and said ‘don’t be too disappointed because you had two of the best footballers in the world eyeing you up’. That is something to take from it. I got their attention a little bit maybe.”
Roche spoke about the thrill of meeting so many legendary footballers but despite the amazing experience, she admits that she wishes the Puskas Award was on her mantelpiece.
“I think I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed,” Roche said.
“As a sportsperson and a footballer obviously you want to win everything you go into but at the same time I was so proud of all the support I got. That’s what gave me hope going into it because the support from Ireland and all over the world was so good.”
There were also video tributes played from Ireland captain Robbie Keane and former international Niall Quinn, who both showered Roche with praise.
