CAVAN SCHOOL ST Pat’s will face off against the reigning Hogan Cup champions Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne at the semi-final stage this year after St Pat’s won today’s MacRory Cup final by ten points against St Pat’s Dungannon at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh.

It was a historic victory for St Pat’s Cavan as they lifted the McRory Cup for the first time since 1972 and there was huge celebrations as they savoured success for the first time in 43 years.

The winners were ahead 0-5 to 0-2 during the opening period but their lead was cut to two – 0-6 to 0-4 – at the interval. Dungannon drew level early in the second-half at 0-6 apiece but the Cavan school made a decisive breakthrough as they struck five points on the spin to go 0-11 to 0-6 clear by the 48th minute.

Two late goals by Thomas Edward Donohue saw them seal victory and brought Donohue’s personal tally for the day to 2-3. The man-of-the-match award went to St Pat’s Cavan midfielder Thomas Galligan.

St Pat’s Cavan will take on PS Chorca Dhuibhne, who recently won a fourth successive Corn Uí Mhuirí title, on the weekend of 28-29 March at the Hogan Cup semi-final stage. The other semi-final clash will be a battle between Wexford’s Good Counsel New Ross and Roscommon CBS, who were crowned Connacht champions last year.

The MacLarnon Cup final was the curtain-raiser today in Armagh and it was an all-Monaghan affair with Our Lady’s Castleblayney triumphing as they defeated Patrician Carrickmacross 4-8 to 0-8.
