ST JUDES HAVE booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Dublin senior football championship with a comfortable 12-point victory over Clontarf this afternoon.
Dublin’s All-Ireland winning star Kevin McManamon kicked two points for the winners, including the opening score of the game, as St Judes, semi-finalists in 2014, saw off Jack McCaffrey’s Clontarf with plenty to spare.
2015 Footballer of the Year McCaffrey, operating at centre back, endured a frustrating afternoon at Parnell Park against a St Judes side that defended well and built up a match-winning lead at the other end of the field.
The St Judes tactics worked as experience and a physical edge provided St Judes with more scoring chances, which they took to join Lucan Sarsfields in the last eight.
Clontarf, beaten semi-finalists last year, managed just two points from play and their second half goal, scored by Brian Forde, was a goalkeeping error by former Dublin netminder Paul Copeland as he let a tame effort into the net.
McManamon made way with three minutes to go after putting in a solid shift while McCaffrey offered himself as an option all through the game but had little support around him and struggled to break through the massed opposition ranks.
At half-time, St Judes were well on their way to victory, having opened up a 1-5 to 0-1 lead.
In first half stoppage time, Declan Donnelly converted a penalty that he won himself to leave daylight between the sides in what, in truth, was a poor game.
McManamon kicked both points off his trusty left boot in the first half but missed a couple too and ended up dropping deep in an attempt to get on the ball.
Niall Coakley, Ross O’Brien and Kieran Doherty were also good for St Judes, kicking seven points between them, O’Brien with three of those scores in a straightforward win.
