A striker in goal and Croly's tough task - the weekend's SSE Airtricity League talking points

Plus, Cork grind out three crucial points.

Croly facing uphill struggle

DROGHEDA’S FIRST WIN in 10 league attempts is very timely, and proves that when presented with the opportunities, they can score goals.

Llyod Buckley celebrates scoring the first goal Drogheda recorded their first victory in ten games on Friday night Ryan Byrne / INPHO Ryan Byrne / INPHO / INPHO

For Bray, that’s 20 goals shipped in their last four games – all defeats. If Trevor Croly does take over, he has much to ponder especially given Bray’s leaking backline.

With no real coaching or team staff in place, his work is really cut out for him at the Carlisle Grounds, amid failing takeover talks. Maybe though, a clean slate is exactly what Bray need.

Horgan unplayable in this form

Daryl Horgan was the difference in this encounter and separated both sides taking part in any moment worth mentioning in the game. If Dundalk can keep him fit this season the SSE Airtricity Premier Division title challenge could be over before it even started.

The link-up play between him and Ronan Finn was breath taking and will be influential in the coming fixtures in the league. Saying this however Longford have to be praised for their performances since joining the league and look to be a stable club in the championship for years to come.

Miserable night for Derry

Anthony Elding takes over as goalkeeper Striker Anthony Elding had to go in goal for Derry Presseye / Lorcan Doherty/INPHO Presseye / Lorcan Doherty/INPHO / Lorcan Doherty/INPHO

Derry boss Peter Hutton claimed he was embarrassed by his side’s performance against Galway and when striker Anthony Elding had to replace the injured Shaun Patton in goal as they chased a 2-0 deficit, it summed up a dreadful night for the home side.

However it could have been worse for the Candystripes had it not been for a great save by Elding with nine minutes remaining as he did superbly to save Padraic Cunningham’s shot in a one-on-one situation.

City grind out three crucial points

How important might this win turn out to be for Cork City? Having taken one point from the previous two games, City looked like being held when Kevin Devaney equalised for Sligo on 75 minutes and Devaney could even have put the visitors ahead before Mark O’Sullivan got the winner. With three vital points gained, John Caulfield’s side will hope that they can now embark on another successful run.
