'I'm number one in my craft but I still show up every day as a beginner'

Sports Illustrated’s new short film on UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is essential viewing.

CONOR McGREGOR FEATURES on the cover of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated and they’ve also put together an excellent short film about the UFC featherweight champion.

The video charts McGregor’s remarkable rise to the top in the UFC, as well as his preparations in Dublin for Saturday week’s bout against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in Las Vegas.

In the space of less than three years, McGregor went from collecting the dole while competing on the regional MMA circuit in Europe to being the biggest star in mixed martial arts and a UFC world title-holder.

“I am number one in my craft, in my game, but I still show up every day as a white belt. I show up every day as a day-one beginner,” McGregor says.

It also includes contributions from UFC president Dana White and John Kavanagh, McGregor’s head coach at Straight Blast Gym on the Naas Road.

“People only knowing him through the TV are only going to see clips,” says Kavanagh. “It’s sort of like a magnified version of somebody. Form your opinion after meeting him, rather than just seeing the character on the TV.”

There’s no shortage of video material out there on Conor McGregor but this piece of work stands out as essential viewing.
