'One gesture of generosity deserves another' - SBW presented with RWC winners' medal

The All Black had given his original to a young fan shortly after yesterday’s final.

SONNY BILL WILLIAMS has been presented with a World Cup winners’ medal at tonight’s World Rugby awards dinner after he gave his original to a young fan at Twickenham yesterday.

Williams handed his medal to 15-year-old Charlie Lines after the All Blacks supporter was tackled to the ground by a steward as he attempted to make his way onto the field.

The 30-year-old New Zealand back said the memories of winning the World Cup with his team-mates was enough and the teenager would appreciate the memento more.

But at the governing body’s gala dinner in London this evening, Williams was called onto stage and presented with a replacement.

“I am sure that he’ll remember it. I’m happy that he has it because I know that he will really appreciate it,” Williams said at Sunday’s World Player of the Year awards.

“When he’s older, he can tell the story to his children.”

He also played down the incident which also saw team-mate and flanker Liam Meesam give the teenager his black beanie hat.

“I’m really surprised, most of the boys would have done the same,” Williams said.

Well played, everyone.
