Sligo Rovers pay tribute to 'larger than life' former striker who has passed away aged 31

Carlos Alvarez had battled a serious illness.

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE expressed their sadness at the death of former striker Carlos Alvarez.

The 31-year-old passed away yesterday morning in his home city of Santa Cruz in Bolivia after battling with a serious illness.

Alvarez moved to Sligo in 2005 and helped the Bit O’Red win the First Division title, scoring crucial goals against Galway United and Cobh Ramblers along the way.

“Sligo Rovers offer our deepest condolences to his Carlos’ family including wife Claudia, son Abele, daughter Kiara in Ireland and his mother Magaly,” a club statement read.

Sligo will pay special tribute to Alvarez at the club’s next home game against Longford Town by inviting his family to attend. A minute’s applause will be held prior to kick-off to remember his life and contribution to Sligo.

“It is such sad news. Carlos was a great lad and a popular figure when he was with us in The Showgrounds. On behalf of the club, we send our sympathies to his family and friends today,” former team-mate, Raffaele Cretaro, said.

This lad isn’t even in the 19s training squad which is already shy of 5 lads that won’t be released by their clubs and there’s another 10 or 20 lads in the same boat as him. Amazing pool of talent between 16 and 19 at present. Long may it last and hopefully prosper at senior level.
