WWE STAR SHEAMUS is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable Irish athletes on the planet.

The fact that the 38-year-old has over two million Twitter followers — more than the likes of Conor McGregor and Brian O’Driscoll — gives you an insight into his current astronomical level of popularity.

A former IT technician and bodyguard to stars such as Bono, he started off in the Irish independent wrestling scene, featuring in shows by the Irish Whip Wrestling organisation, and Sheamus has barely looked back since. In 2006, he signed a developmental contract with the WWE before ultimately becoming a star, winning the WWE (World Heavyweight) Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once.

Yet the Dubliner, whose real name is Stephen Farrelly, also has plenty of interests outside of wrestling. He stars as Rocksteady in the upcoming movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which is released tomorrow in Irish cinemas.

You can check out the highlights of Sheamus’ interview with The42 above.
