STOKE CITY HAVE announced the signing of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given on a two-year deal.

The vastly-experienced stopper was a free agent after being released from his contract a year early by Aston Villa, but Potters manager Mark Hughes has acted swiftly to win the race for the Donegal native.

Middlesborough, where 39-year-old Given enjoyed a loan spell 18 months ago, were also keen on a move.

I know Shay particularly well from our time together at Manchester City and I’m really looking forward to working with him again,” said Hughes.

“He will not only be a great asset on the pitch as an outstanding goalkeeper but he’s also a fantastic character to have in the dressing room and around the Club – a true professional.”

The move could pave the way for current Stoke number one Asmir Begovic to replace Petr Cech at Chelsea.
