However, the 24-year-old had a second bite of the cherry in the repechage less than an hour afterwards with a prize in the second round on offer for the winner.
But McCurley, the first female track cyclist to represent Ireland at the Olympics, failed to make her presence felt in the repechage and she came home fourth, 0.268 seconds behind race winner Anastasiia Aoinova of Russia.
