Blistering start for Shane Lowry at The Players, Day equals course record

Lowry two shots behind world number one Day after the morning’s play at Sawgrass.

SHANE LOWRY SHOT a sensational seven-under par 65 to set the early pace at The Players Championship — golf’s unofficial “fifth Major.”

Lowry blitzed the back nine at TPC Sawgrass in just 29 shots, including five birdies and an eagle, for a share of the clubhouse lead.

But he was overtaken before long by world number one Jason Day who shot a bogey-free 63 to equal the course record.

Day leads by two shots after a morning filled with low scores, with Lowry joined by Cameron Tringale, Justin Rose and Bill Haas on seven-under par.

The Clara man’s only blip came at the sixth hole where he had his only bogey of the day, but he bounced back in brilliant fashion after the turn.
