IT BOILED DOWN to fine margins in yesterday’s Munster senior hurling quarter-final in Thurles, with Limerick edging past Clare by a point.
But Shane Dowling, scorer of 0-11 for the Shannonsiders at Semple Stadium, insisted afterwards that one of his scores should have been waved wide.
Dowling was credited with a close-range free to hand Limerick a 1-18 to 1-14 lead in the 62nd minute but Clare goalkeeper Patrick Kelly and his defenders remonstrated with the umpires behind the Killinan End posts, insisting that the ball had rocketed wide of the right hand upright.
Dowling believed the shot was wide when speaking to reporters afterwards.

“Well the first thing I have to sum up, because if I don’t sum it up the Sunday Game will, the free above now – it should have been a draw game.
“The stats went like that. That’s the way your luck goes, Limerick got done in Croke Park with Hawk-Eye so maybe we deserved a bit of luck.”
However The Sunday Game tweeted today proof that Dowling did actually score on that occasion.

@TheSundayGame fair enough thought at the time it was wide. 👍
Dowling also hit out at Limerick’s critics after the players set up a Munster semi-final clash with Tipperary on 21 June.
The Treaty men failed to achieve promotion from Division 1B of the Allianz League and were hammered by Dublin in the quarter-finals.
But once again, TJ Ryan’s men delivered a big championship performance on the back of a disappointing Spring campaign.

“Look I’m sick to the head of people going on about Limerick in the league and the sooner they realise it the better.
“Because they can shout year in and year out about ‘Limerick this and that’ and they can tweet all the like and abuse all the players they like.
“I said it last year and I said it the year before, but it’s not working and the sooner they row in behind us the better for them.”
For the record, The Sunday Game’s live broadcast appeared to show that Dowling’s effort WAS a point, and the matter was not raised on last night’s highlights show.
