Shamrock Rovers continue pre-season build-up with win over Argentina U23s

Rovers boosted their chances of reaching the semi-finals of the Nagjee International Cup thanks to Killian Brennan’s strike.

A SPECTACULAR KILLIAN Brennan free-kick was the difference between Shamrock Rovers and Argentina U23s as Pat Fenlon’s men secured their second win of the Nagjee International Cup in India.

The Hoops came into the game on the back of a narrow win over 1860 Munich II, having bounced back from their opening defeat to Dnipro. The victory over Argentina boosts their chances of reaching the semi-finals of the friendly competition.

Miguel Barbieri had the best chance of the first-half when he headed narrowly wide from a free-kick, but the two teams went in level at the break.

After a physical half it was Rovers who came out with greater intent and the breakthrough came after 68 minutes when Dean Clark was fouled at the edge of the area. Killian Brennan stepped up to curl the ball well beyond the reach of Matias Caputo into the left corner of the net.

Franco Montavano had a brilliant opportunity to haul his side level 10 minutes before the end when he got on to the end of a Mauro Ortiz cross, but the forward’s header flashed wide of Barry Murphy’s post.

Having moved into second place in Group B, Rovers will be hoping that 1860 Munich II fail to win against Dnipro on Tuesday.
